ก่อนปรินิพพาน พระพุทธเจ้าได้ตรัสปัจฉิมโอวาทเตือนสาวกทั้งหลายว่า “สังขารทั้งปวงไม่จีรัง มีเกิด มีแตกสลาย เป็นธรรมดา เธอทั้งหลายจงยังประโยชน์ตนและประโยชน์ท่านให้ถึงพร้อมด้วยความไม่ประมาทเกิด”
